Pardus Capital was launched in April 2005 by Karim Samii, who enjoyed a successful career at the investment firm W. R. Huff of Morristown, N.J. The fund has been an “activist” and is already earning a reputation as a renegade hedge fund.

The decision to start his own hedge fund came on a bright, snowy morning in December 2003, when he and his wife were visiting his in-laws in Hamburg, Germany. "I was jogging around the lake and I said to myself, 'Where do I want to be five years from now?' " he said. "It's a big bet," said Mr. Samii, 42. "But if you think you're good, you take the risk."
