From Barron's 5-14-07
Pricing Power.
"Today, there are probably more stocks with prices above $100 per share than ever before. According to numbers furnished by Standard & Poor's, as of Thursday there were 34 stocks in the S&P 500 priced in the triple-digits. You have to go back to 1999 and before that, 1997, to find as many as 27 stocks priced above $100 at any year's end. At Barron's request, the researchers at Bespoke Investment Group put together a portfolio of all S&P 500 stocks that were priced at $100 a share -- or more -- a year ago, and then added to it any stock that attained $100 in subsequent months. The "$100 club" portfolio returned 20.6% in the year through Wednesday, versus 15.4% for the overall S&P 500. That's a substantial (if short-term) outperformance for stocks that had already gotten to the century mark before they were "bought."
